Hey Mom, Now What?

About Me

Do you ever ask yourself “Ok, Now What?”

I often find myself asking this question when something happens in my home that makes me stop, mouth agape with a “Huh?” kind of look on my face. You know, those times when you are presented with a scenario that just isn’t covered in the typical parenting books and you have no darn clue what you should do next. Yeah, those times. My kids like to joke with me that someone could grow a beard between the time I say “OK, so…. ” to finally finishing the sentence. But, why am I stumped? As a mom to 5 kids, some would say I have a pretty long dossier of mom experience and expertise. And maybe I know a thing or three about raising kids. There are so many times, though, when I just don’t have a clue what to do next.

Let me tell you a little about me

My name is Allie. I am a mother of 5 children, who I divide into two groups, my Bigs and my Littles. My Bigs are ages 16, 13 and 12, and my Littles are ages 4 and 2. Yes, I have a huge spread in the ages of my kiddos, and it makes for some crazy times at my house. My husband, Steve, and I share this blended family, with the two Littles being his children and my three Bigs being from my first marriage. As a blended family, we face a lot of unique situations and challenges that I am sure many of you are familiar with. Maybe you have some of the same issues come up that I face.

I work full time as an Emergency Mental Health Clinician, and I have a really crazy work schedule. I work three 12 hour shifts a week, sometimes back to back, so even though I work full time, I am able to be an (almost) full time stay at home mom, too. It was this double-life, if you will, of being both a SAHM and a Working Mom that led me to have some of my biggest “Now what?” moments. I have experienced the absolute joy of being able to spend almost every moment home with my baby as she grows under my wing in my home. I also have experienced the isolation and boredom of every day feeling like it is the same as the last… laundry, diaper, dishes, repeat. On the flip side, I have the honor of really helping people through my career and earning money to help with the family budget. But, as I am sure you Working Moms know, I have had mom guilt about being away from my children, and only being able to spend a fraction of their waking hours with them when I come home from work.

Which leads me to why I am writing this blog

All moms have questions. I have questions. You have questions. I think we all can agree that the age that our children are growing up in is an alien civilization compared to when we were kids. Momming is no longer the same territory it was 20 years ago. We all are going to be faced with challenges that we have no way to predict or to solve. Maybe you have issues that people just don’t really talk about, and you are afraid to even ask what to do next. These are the topics I want to talk about.
